06. Appearing and Coming

 APPEARING and COMING

Appearing and Coming —- Many proponents of the pre-tribulation rapture claim that the “rapture” will be a SILENT event. Their motive for this claim is to discount Matthew 24:29-31 as the “rapture” because that profound description clearly takes place AFTER the Great Tribulation [verse 29], and their position holds to the notion that the Church will be raptured prior to the Great Tribulation. Their claim is that the “rapture” will take place in a “silent” event seven years prior to the well defined event of the following passage. Let’s take a look at what the New Testament says about THE APPEARING.

Appearing —-Matt 24:29-31

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days”

the sun will be darkened,

and the moon will not give its light;

the stars will fall from the sky,

and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

30 “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

  • it is emphatically held by the pre-tribulationist, that the resurrection of the righteous will take place SEVEN YEARS prior to the event of verse 30, in reprehensible opposition to Rev. 20:4-6—–”this is the FIRST resurrection”.

Col 3:3-4

3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

1 Peter 5:4

4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

  • Rev. 11:18 tells us that we will receive our rewards at the seventh trumpet [the Last Trump].

1 John 2:28

28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

1 John 3:2

2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

2 Tim 4:1

4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;.

  • it is clear in this verse, that the “appearing” and the beginning of the millennial reign, take place at the same time and with NO separation of “seven years”.

2 Tim 4:8

8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

  • Rev 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; ———–and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

Titus 2:13

13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

1 Peter 1:7

7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

THE COMING

1 Cor 1:7-8

7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1 Cor 15:23-24

23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

  • how can one possibly place a seven year “GAP” between verses 23 and 24?
  • Christ will PUT DOWN all rule and authority “at his coming”.
  • we are Christ’s——-AT HIS COMING!

 1 Thess 2:19

19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

1 Thess 4:15-18

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  [Rev.20:4-7 This is the first resurrection].

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

  • the pre-tribulationist claims that Rev. 4:1 is a representation of the rapture, as John envisions himself passing through an “open door” in heaven. in fact, at the rapture, the Elect will not be gathered through an open door in heaven , but rather—-to meet Christ IN THE AIR! we are to comfort ourselves with these words.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

 2 Thess 2:1-2

2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

  • are we to believe that there is a seven year GAP between the “coming” of the Lord and our “gathering” to be with him?

2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand [imminent].

 2 Thess 2:3

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

  • “that day”—-what day?——–verse 1, “our gathering to be with him”.
  • “that day” [of our gathering] shall NOT COME until AFTER the man of sin is revealed.

2 Thess 2:8-

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

  • we will be gathered at the “Coming” of Jesus Christ!
  • Antichrist will be destroyed at the “COMING” of Jesus Christ.
  • “destroyed—–coming”, “coming—-destroyed”—-a seven year gap between the two?—–insane!

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

        James 5:7

7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

  2 Peter 3:12

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

  • we are to be LOOKING FOR that day when the “ELEMENTS WILL MELT WITH FERVENT HEAT”, and NOT FOR a secret, silent rapture followed by a seven year peace agreement.

 1 John 2:28

28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

The notion that there is more than ONE “appearing/coming” ie. a pre-tribulation rapture followed by an official “second coming” seven years later, is simply not supported in the New Testament. There is only one “appearing/coming” as soundly declared in these previous verses—-that Blessed Hope and Glorious Appearing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ following the Tribulation of the Saints!

“They overcame by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony—–and loved not their lives, even unto death”.
