04. The Gathering

Gathering lesson

This lesson deals with the Biblical description of the GATHERING of God’s Elect to meet Christ in the air at his coming. The more common word used in evangelical circles today is THE RAPTURE. Many fanciful, even heretical, notions abound concerning this event. The most popular opinion regarding this topic is the DOCTRINE OF IMMINENCE. We, as many others, do not believe that popular notion to be Biblical. Let’s take a look at this particular element of the Second Coming of Christ.

THE GATHERING

NT:4536—-Trump/Trump

salpigx (sal’-pinx); perhaps from NT:4535 (through the idea of quavering or reverberation):

KJV – a trumpet:

KJV – trump (-et).

1 Cor 15:51-53

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

  • the “last trump” inherently suggests that this “trump” must be associated with a series of “trumpet” soundings simply because it is the LAST TRUMP.
  •   the only series of trumpet soundings in the New Testament are found in the book of Revelation and there are, in fact, seven of them.

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

1 Thess 4:15

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

  •   this word “remain” is a poorly translated word in the King’s English. The correct translation is—-”survive”.

NT:4035—-remain

perileipo (per-ee-li’-po); from NT:4012 and NT:3007; to leave all around, i.e. (passively) survive:

  •   this passage speaks of what survives, what is scattered about.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

  •   we which are alive and SURVIVE shall be caught up together with them—-

Matt 24:31

31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

  •  Christ gathers his Elect—-living and dead—at the sound of the LAST TRUMP

Rev 11:15-18

15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever.

16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,

17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

  •   the seventh angel sounds—–the LAST TRUMP
  •   it is time for the saints to receive their rewards
  •   it is time for the judgment of the earth

The Gathering by the ANGELS

NT:4863—-gathered

sunago (soon-ag’-o); from NT:4862 and NT:71; to lead together, i.e. collect or convene; specifically, to entertain (hospitably):

KJV – + accompany, assemble (selves, together), bestow, come together, gather (selves together, up, together), lead into, resort, take in.

Matt 3:11-12

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Matt 13:27-30

27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Matt 13:37-39

37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Luke 3:16-18

16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

Eph 1:5-10

5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

10 That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

  •   he will gather the souls of the righteous from Heaven
  •   and will resurrect the bodies of the dead to meet their souls in the air
  •   the ANGELS will gather those who survive the Great Tribulation
  •   ALL will meet Christ IN THE AIR

Matt 24:29-31

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
